Transcendance
Graham Hicks

This past weekend two artistic directors, Citie Ballet's Francois Chevennement and Chameleon Dance Edmonton's Jojo Lucila collaborated on a major modern ballet, Transcendance at the Eva Howard Theatre.

Unfortunately, it was a one-night-only show.

Any dance fan in town would have enjoyed the quality, production standards and inspired movement from two dance companies obviously in it for the love, not the money. It's not to be missed, next time around.

Chevennement explores
Sherry Dawn Knettle

Choreographer Francois Chevennement had always imagined sharing his work with artists from other dance disciplines; when he recently became artistic director of Citie Ballet, he found the opportunity to fulfill that dream by making a commitment to share one concert each year with a company who worked in another dance form.

His plan for the annual show would involve himself and another choreographer exchanging dancers and creating a new piece for them.

As well, each would set a new work on the combined group. It seemed risky, but Chevennement knows what it takes to succeed and now, in his second year of blurring the boundaries between different dance styles, he has invited Orchesis, a group of modern dancers from U of A. During his first rehearsal with them, he sensed a slight anxiety.

Love is (still) in the air

Andrea Mills, Home Associate

The painting Dance (I) by Henri Matisse has always had an effect on me, and I came across it again recently as part of a press release for a mixed-works dance show at the Eva O. Howard Theatre in Edmonton on Saturday, Feb. 23. The evening, a combination of professional ballet companies and young dancers from local dance studios, is hosted by Citie Ballet to raise funds to help support the Zebra Child Protection Centre. With a multi-disciplinary, centralized team approach, it is the only centre of its kind in Canada ‚ providing the environment and nurturing to help young victims of abuse while striving to prevent the added trauma that criminally processing these cases typically involves. Being that I¼m from Edmonton (part II), I can guarantee this will be an entertaining night of top-notch performers and a great sampling of some classical and more contemporary ballet ‚ and a great belated gift for your valentine if you¼ve been under a rock, or more likely a snow pile, for the last week.

Expect vivacity and versatility
Citie Ballet's weekend performance revolves around the letter 'V'

Pamela Anthony, Freelance

EDMONTON - This weekend's Citie Ballet performance will be brought to you by the letter "V."

"V" is for Vice Versa, a new work from William Thompson and Francois Chevennenent. "V" is also for La Vivandiere, a classical work with music from, you guessed it, Johann Vahnal. There will also be a premiere from the company's resident choreographer Solveig Groenland to the music of Peteris Vask. Needless to say, a violinist will be playing during the intervals.

Citie Ballet Havana good time with Freefall and Convergence
Sherry Dawn Knettle

"It's a different approach in Cuba," says choreographer François Chevennement. "Dancing there is a lifestyle. You don't go anywhere just to dance -- you dance all the time.

"People walk from shop to shop dancing. They have a rhythmic way of movingãyou see the shoulders and head moving all the time. It's part of the way they live. They're born with music and dance--it's part of the culture--it's normal."

Chevennement, Citie Ballet's artistic director, was in Cuba recently where he got a close look at the Cuban lifestyle.

When ballet meets jazz, the result is Convergence
by Pamela Anthony

EDMONTON - Convergence sprang from one of those moments when a wild idea becomes "Why not?" Citie Ballet's Francois Chevennement recalls seeing a show by the jazz ensemble FreeFall Dance. With him was artistic director emeritus Bill Thomson.

"I said, 'Wow, they're fantastic. Let's do something with them,' " recalls Chevennement. "And we thought, 'Well ... why not?' "

He proposed a "ballet meets jazz" collaboration to FreeFall Dance choreographer Laura Krewski, and a show was born.

Euterpe meets Terpsichore
Citie Ballet hosts verse-fueled visions

Edmonton's Citie Ballet, a company that usually works with emerging dancers, has enlisted a variety of top-notch professionals to produce Lips Love Legs; the roster responsible for this unique blend of dance and poetry features seven choreographers and close to 35 dancers, including "some of the best dancers in the city," says artistic director William Thompson.

The poetry, which has been recorded by professional actors, was commissioned from St. Maur, based on the choreographers' suggestions, and covers as wide a range of topics as the choreography does dance styles.
