Artistic Director
François Chevennement

François Chevennement was previously Artistic Director of Dance Alberta in Edmonton prior to accepting the same position with Citie Ballet as of July 1, 2006. In his first season with Citie Ballet he revealed a strong artistic vision with excellent productions starting with an Hommage à Billy Bob and finishing the season with Convergence a collaborative performance with FreeFall Dance where the evening’s closing work, choreographed by Mr. Chevennement, received a standing ovation. Strong marketing and increased ticket sales were indicative of his boundless energy and commitment to leadership.

Mr. Chevennement was born in Dijon, France and trained at the National Conservatory of Dance in Avignon. He began his professional career with the Opera Avignon before continuing on to Ballet du Nord (France) and the Alberta Ballet as a principal dancer. Over the past 15 years Mr. Chevennement has performed principal and soloist roles in many of the great classical ballets such as Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Coppélia, Paquita and The Nutcracker. He has danced in the ballets of major choreographers of this century including George Balanchine, Paul Taylor, John Butler, and Jose Limon and has worked with some of today’s leading contemporary choreographers such as Robert North, Jennifer Muller, Margo Sappington, and Jean Paul Comelin. Mr. Chevennement has also begun to establish himself as a choreographer of note in his own right. In 2005 collaborated with Citie Ballet to create the very successful Woman in a Mirror to the poetry of Gerald St. Maur. The work was premiered October 15, 2005 in the sold out performance of Lips Love Legs.

Mr. Chevennement began his teaching career with the School of Dance of Mende teaching all levels from beginner to advanced and was awarded the State Diploma of Teacher of Classical Dance (France) in 1994. Mr. Chevennement has been an invited guest teacher for Ballet du Nord and also taught at the School of Ballet du Nord. At the invitation of Artistic Directors Mikko Nissinen and Jean Grand-Maître, Mr. Chevennement has been a frequent guest teacher for the Alberta Ballet. His energetic and personable approach is always well received.
